Our plan for a
world-leading
carbon storage
cluster
Providing a permanent decarbonisation solution for industry
The depleted gas fields off the coast of Barrow-in-Furness provide permanent, safe and secure carbon storage.
The North and South Morecambe gas fields will be repurposed into a world-leading facility, able to accept up to 1 gigaton of CO₂ in its lifetime. This is the equivalent of three years’ worth of UK emissions.

Unleashing the UK’s CCUS potential - the Morecambe Bay opportunity

UK’s Largest Facility
The MNZ Cluster has the potential to be the UK’s biggest carbon storage facility
Strategic Location
The facility will support communities in the North West, and its location near the Port of Barrow means it can accept CO₂ from emitters all over the UK and Europe
Permanent and Safe Storage
The project repurposes existing assets to provide permanent CO₂ storage, offering emitters a long-term Net Zero solution
Meeting the UK’s Carbon Storage Needs
The site’s significant capacity will help meet the Government’s carbon storage needs
Job Security
It will secure the futures of thousands of industrial jobs currently reliant on emitters across the UK

CO₂ Transport
The facility will accept CO₂ by pipeline and can scale to accept it by ship and rail
Attracting Investment
The CCUS industry has huge economic potential and could attract £100bn of investment into the UK by 2050, with an exportable value of £2.1bn per year by 2050

Low-Carbon Super Place
Our ambition to create a future low-carbon super place in the area will attract further international investment, as we innovate and pioneer new and exciting technologies
